Wholesome Healthy Dual-purpose Dog Biscuits

All the ingredients in these Wholesome Healthy Dual-purpose Dog Biscuits, from the 4 grains, milk, yeast and chicken broth, combine together to produce 18 large healthy biscuits which helps provide the nutrients your pet requires for healthy teeth, bones, and body.

Ingredients: 3½ c all-purpose flour

1 c rye flour

2 c whole wheat flour

1 c cornmeal

2 c bulgur

½ c dry milk powder

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast

¼ c warm water

2½ c chicken broth

4 tsp salt

1 egg

1 T milk

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in the ¼c warm water until it becomes foamy. (approximately 10 minutes.)
  3. Combine the flours, cornmeal, bulgur and powdered milk in a large bowl.
  4. Stir in the foamy yeast mixture, chicken broth and salt. Mix together until the batter forms a stiff dough. (If the dough is too dry, add a little more broth until it is of rolling consistency.)
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and roll it to a ¼” thickness.
  6. Using your choice of cookies cutters, cut into your desired dog biscuit shape.
  7. Place your Wholesome Healthy Dual-purpose Dog Biscuits about 1” apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  8. Mix the egg with the milk, then lightly brush over the tops of each biscuit.
  9. Place the biscuits in your preheated oven, cooking for 45 minutes.
  10. Then turn off the oven and leave your Wholesome Healthy Dual-purpose Dog Biscuits in the closed oven overnight in order for them to become extra hard and crunchy. Your dog’s delight!

Variations: 1. Substitute brewer’s yeast (combine in step3), for the dry active yeast in step 2. Omit the ¼ c warm water. 2. For an added nutrient boast, add 1 T dried alfalfa or parsley to the above recipe in step 3. (Both alfalfa and parsley are helpful in reducing arthritis pain. Parsley has a longstanding folklore reputation in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis and sciatica. It’s high concentration of boron and fluoride may help against bone thinning and osteoporosis that is prevalent in some dog breeds.)
