Critic’s Choice Crunchy Doggie Chews

These healthy crunchy dog biscuits have just a hint of peanut butter flavour to entice your pet to clean his teeth naturally while satisfying his sometimes insatiable need to chew and munch, instead of destroying your favourite pair of shoes! Rolled oats and cornmeal in these Critic’s Choice Crunchy Doggie Chews help ensure that there is enough roughage in your pet’s diet to avoid constipation. This recipe makes 36 generous biscuits of choice.

Ingredients: ½ c all-purpose flour

1½ c whole wheat flour

½ c rolled oats

½ c cornmeal
½ c water, or as needed

2 eggs

3 T peanut butter

½ c canola oil
3 tsp vanilla extract

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F, and prepare two cookie sheets by lightly greasing them.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flours, oats and cornmeal.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the water, eggs, peanut butter, oil and vanilla.
  4. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.
  5. Slowly stir in the wet ingredients, mixing all together well.
  6. Turn the batter out onto a floured board, and roll the dough out approximately ¼” thick.
  7. Using a cookie cutter of your choice, cut out the dough. Re-roll the scraps, and cut those also.
  8. Put your Critic’s Choice Crunchy Doggie Chews onto the prepared cookie sheets and bake for approximately 20 minutes in your preheated oven.
  9. Leaving your cookies in the oven, turn off the heat and allow the Critic’s Choice Crunchy Doggie Chews to cool and harden for another 20 minutes before removing them.
  10. Remove from the cookie sheets, and store in a lidded container once completely cooled.
  11. Whenever your pet demonstrates his knawing need to chew, substitute a Critic’s Choice Crunchy Doggie Chews for his chewing pleasure!

Variations: 1. If your dog has a corn allergy, you can substitute additional flour or oats for the cornmeal. 2. Substitute ¼ c good quality vegetable oil, ¼ c cooled bacon fat, and 3 T honey for the ½ c of canola oil for added flavour and as an alternative to using the canola oil. Bake on non-greased Teflon cookie sheets.
