Simple all-natural homemade cough syrup/sore-throat remedy

Monday, October 20th, 2008

This very simple remedy has been around and used effectively for a number of years. The first time I heard of it, I balked. Onion-flavored cough syrup? I don’t think so! I would have to be pretty darn sick to subject myself to raw onions when my throat is already raw and sore! The idea was not even remotely appealing. Even though I was assured that there was no onion flavour, I was very hesitant to accept this remedy and incorporate it into my all-natural health arsenal.

However………there came a time when I did give it a try. And, surprisingly enough, there really isn’t an onion flavour to the cough syrup. In fact, it is hard to identify the actual ‘flavour’ imparted, but it is definitely pleasant-tasting, effective and really did ease my sore throat considerably! Not only that, but I was able to sleep through the first night without coughing.

It certainly makes sense that an onion-based remedy would be effective because as we all know (and if you don’t, refer to the article on ‘foods that help body parts’), onions support our immune system and body cells–whether it is to help flush out toxins, or to repair, replace, or replenish, onions play a major part in healthy eating. And couple that with a honey chaser—definitely a winning combo!

Should you be able to get past the idea that the main ingredient is an onion quicker than I could, this is an excellent and effective all-natural cough syrup/sore throat soother that tastes good–not too mention it is a healthy alternative, too! The added bonus here, is that there are no warnings of ‘not to drive or operate heavy equipment’ when you take this homemade remedy!

Here is the onion & honey cough syrup/sore throat remedy/recipe:

Trim and peel a medium-sized white onion. Slice half the onion, and place the slices together in a small bowl. Cover the onion slices with honey, then cover the bowl with saran wrap. Leave on the counter, unattended for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight. Strain off the accumulated ‘syrup’ that has formed, (I like this part best!), and throw out the onion slices.

Use the accumulated ‘syrup’ as you would any store-bought over-the-counter cough syrup: Take 1 tablespoon of the gathered syrup up to once every four hours, or as required, to ease a sore throat and calm a pesky cough.

Not only will you be able to sleep peacefully throughout the night without coughing, during the day you can go about your daily routine without having this rhaving to stay away from driving due to other store-bought medications you may have.
